Cole Smallwood a reader? Of course, Cole has been a reader since day one. His best memories come from all the times sitting in a blanket fort reading Where the Wild Things Are. Cole was very interested in reading until around middle school when the attraction was merely lost. Once Smallwood got into high school, he began having to read for classes and the interest came on and off depending on whether or not he had a good book. Now a day’s, Cole attempts to read in his free time on most occasions. When he reads he usually becomes fascinated with the book and his surroundings generally mean nothing. Basically, Cole always loses his self while reading. Smallwood read no books this summer, but last year he read six personal books, four of them were for SSR projects. Cole enjoys reading titles from Mike Lupica mainly due to his enthusiasm in sports. Also Smallwood enjoys Chris Crutcher's books Whale Talk and Staying Fat for Sarah Brynes. The Smallwood house roughly has around 20 or so books because all of the moving, but all the books are family favorites. Cole is an engaged reader. The genre really doesn’t matter due to his array of interests. As a reader Smallwood has grown essentially by sticking with books, and as he has grown up he has developed more confident and challenges himself as a reader more often.
When it comes to writing it is Cole's strong suit. He learned to write basically by always writing stories when he was bored. One of Cole's favorite writing activities in elementary school was to finish a drawing then do a creative write about it. If you ask Cole to this day he would probably credit his abilities to activities like that. Cole believes that learning to write is done by repetition. Whether or not the writing is good just doing it as often as possible makes you a better writer. Smallwood writes mainly writes because he has to all the time, but some people write even on their own time. For example many people write to express their feelings. Also it is a good way to spill to spill out creativity that all bunched up in your head. In order to be able to write you need to be able to spell and use proper punctuation. After that Smallwood believes it is up to the writer if it is good. Cole’s favorite writing to do is creative writing. He could sit and type up a story that was made up in his head. Smallwood’s ideas for writing are usually spontaneous. It’s not too often he looks at other work for examples because originality is key. As a writer the best response for criticism is honesty. Cole doesn’t take these things personal. It is important for this information to be viewed as constructive criticism. Cole generally never writes at home besides making to-do lists. In general Smallwood views his writing as his a way to show people his thoughts and feelings.
